Howdy all,
I happen to live in Lincoln Park, a city of around 40,000 people just on the south border of Detroit. Lincoln Park along with over a dozen other citys make up what is generally considered part of Downriver. These cities and towns stretch uninterupted for about 15 to 20 miles south of the city border and contain over 500,000 people in mostly working class communities.
The common misconception about Downriver is that it is on what is called "the west side" of Detroit. This could not be further from the truth unless we were considered part of Canada. Detroit is shaped like a square with the southeast portion seemingly chopped off by the river. As a result any news coming from the south end of town is referred to as being located in Southwest Detroit. This, I believe, leaves people who have never ventured south of 8 mile road to think there is no south of detroit, only north and west.
My friends and coworkers who live north of the city have no idea where "Downriver" is or what it really constitutes. When I say I live in Lincoln Park the most common response is "That's on the West side, right?".
What are some of the misconceptions about where you live by the people outside your community?
