The first settler in Fremont was Daniel R. Joslin, he built his home here in 1854, and named it Elm Corners. Fremont's first postmaster, Daniel Weaver, at the other end of town, opened a post office called the Weaversville Post Office in 1855. Then in 1862, during the Civil War, the town was renamed to Fremont Center, named after John Charles Fremont a Union general. Fremont Center was shortened to just Fremont in 1911 after the town changed status and became a city rather than a village. Today Fremont is the largest city in Newaygo County.
