With the so called Potomac Primaries happening today I thought if might be helpful to see where we are at and what is at stake today (bring along your pain relievers-this stuff ain't simple).
First, the current delegate counts. Along with the delegates assigned from voting I am listing the current count of superdelegates and then the total. This is done because superdelegates are state party leaders who can change their minds so this amount is somewhat fluid.
Current Delegate standings as of 2/11/2008 with 2,025 currently needed for nomination...
Candidate.......................Elected Delegates......Super Delegates*......Total
Senator Hillary Clinton................924.............+..........211..............=1, 135
Senator Barack Obama.............1,011.............+.........131..............=1,142
Senator John Edwards..................26.............+............0................ ..=26
*Due to the nature of 795 (was 796 but Tom Lantos died yesterday)superdelegates declaring for a candidate there are some total differences according to the organization keeping tabs on this. Here is a chart for comparison. For our purposes I have gone with the most conservative counts to avoid speculation. Superdelegate Comparison:
*Candidate.....DCW.*..CNN...CBS....APClinton
Sen. Clinton....224....223....211....243
Sen. Obama....132....131....137....156Updated 2/11/2008
There are still 1,318 elected delegates and 453 superdelegates left.
Senator Clinton needs 930 to obtain the nomination, Senator Obama 923. Sen. Mike Gravel at this point needs 849 to force a second ballot at the convention, but that number will drop as the candidates split delegates (like any of us needed to know that).
Okay, with all that said here are the Primaries in question for today:
*District of Columbia* 15 delegates will be decided to day with up to 23 more to come after an April 23rd state convention. Some of those 23 are superdelegates and won't be bound by either today's vote or the state convention.
*Maryland* 70 delegates will be chosen based on the candidates percentage of the vote. The state has an additional 29 superdelegates (simple, ain't it).
*Virginia *83 delegates will be chosen. 54 will be allocated by percentage of a candidates votes by district. 29 will be allocated by statewide vote. Another additional 18 delegates are superdelegates.
Results of today's votes tomorrow.
