View Full Version : Recession for US Economy?

Various economic reports say 'yes" and others say "no"...that the US will not head into a recession (or is in the early stages of a recession now).

I thought it might be interesting to see what members of our web site feel?

Is the US in a recession?

Is the US headed towards a recession?

Please share your thoughts. We may have similar beliefs, and it may be interesting to find out how similar (or different) our beliefs are.

Me: I feel that while our state is in a recession, the entire US economy is slowly moving towards a recession. (Should this happen, I hope that is is a shortly lived recession.) If a US recession occurs, I believe the world economy will feel the pinch with us, since a lot of their products are sold here.

Hope you want to share your thoughts, along with voting in the pole.

I believe we are in a recession but it's hard to see otherwise when living in Michigan.
My sister who lives in West Virginia doesn't see it because they are going through an economic boom.
I base my belief on the housing markets, not just Michigans, they are failing all over.

As Aimee said, it's hard to see past the state line, but I definitely believe we are in a recession. There are a few places in the country that are booming, but I don't think there are many. Two of my sons live in Louisville, KY and it is not difficult to find a job there if you like making $7-8 an hour.

Since starting this thread, my view has changed. I do believe the US is now in the early stages of a recession. But, the US economy has a long way to go before it catches up with Michigan's economy. We've been dangling out here, all by ourselves, for a long long time. (I only wonder whether Michigan will recover whent the rest of the US economy does...or if we'll continue spirling downward.)

Good question, LPTaxpayer. We seem to be treated like a step child of sorts. Every time I hear the President say that our economy is doing well, I ask if he has ever set foot in Michigan.

Harrison - And, if he has (or even thinks about Michigan), it is burried. No one wants to look at what our "global economy" has done to one state. "Remember...we are a 'One State' Recession. No one really wants to help solve the problems." They just leave us dangling. Maybe they hope our problems will fade away. Looks like it won't. Instead, it is spreading through the rest of the country...and perhaps the global economy.

They won't get any sympathy from those of us in Michigan. We've experienced the pain for a longer period of time, and to a greater extent.

People are always complaining about how all of our jobs went first to Mexico, and then to China.

But what you don't hear EMPHASIZED is that it was U.S. COMPANIES that sent our jobs over there to make more money (profit). And then the same companies scream when quality has dropped (stuff made in China, for example). It is the U.S. companies that have made Michigan jobs disappear and then you have a "hometown son" like Romney saying that he wanted to make the U.S. a global superpower again. Gimme a break!

This is why I didn't feel we would be any better off in Michigan if Romney was the President than I would with anyone else. He didn't understand our economic issues. Even if it hurt, McCain was right, in the words of Springsteen, "these jobs are going boys, and they ain't comin' back".

Jeff,

You are absolutely right! McCain has (so far) been the ONLY candidate who has been honest enough to say that those jobs will never come back to Michigan.
