Carl Milton Levin, a Democrat (http://sourcewatch.org/index.php?title=Democratic_Party), has been a Senator (http://sourcewatch.org/index.php?title=U.S._Senate) from Michigan (http://sourcewatch.org/index.php?title=Category:Members_of_the_U.S._Congress_from_Michigan) since 1979.
Levin was born June 28, 1934 in Detroit, Michigan. He graduated from Swarthmore College in 1956 and from Harvard Law School in 1959. Soon after earning his law degree, he was admitted to the Michigan bar and opened a practice in Detroit, where he still lives.
Levin was state assistant attorney general and general counsel for the Michigan civil rights commission from 1964-1967. He was special assistant attorney general for the State of Michigan and chief appellate defender for the city of Detroit from 1968-69. He was a member of the Detroit City Council 1969-77, the last four years as council president.
Levin's family has long been active in Michigan politics. His older brother, Sandy Levin (http://sourcewatch.org/index.php?title=Sandy_Levin), has served in the U.S. House since 1983. His uncle, Theodore Levin (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Theodore_Levin), was a federal judge. His first cousin, Charles Levin (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_Levin), was a Michigan Supreme Court judge. His first cousin, Joseph Levin (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joseph_Levin), was a candidate for the House.
According to his Senate biography (http://levin.senate.gov/levbio.htm), Levin has earned a reputation as a strong supporter of our national defense and an effective waste fighter.... In 2002, as chairman of the Governmental Affairs Committee's Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations (http://sourcewatch.org/index.php?title=Permanent_Subcommittee_on_Investigations), Levin led Congress' most in-depth examination into the collapse of Enron Corporation (http://sourcewatch.org/index.php?title=Enron_Corporation). Levin also initiated an investigation into gasoline price spikes, and in April 2002 he issued a 400 page report and chaired hearings detailing how U.S. retail gasoline prices are manipulated.
Levin's Whistleblower Protection Act (http://sourcewatch.org/index.php?title=Whistleblower_Protection_Act&action=edit) protects federal employees who expose wasteful practices. Levin also helped author the Taxpayers Bill of Rights (http://sourcewatch.org/index.php?title=Taxpayers_Bill_of_Rights&action=edit), which protects individuals and small businesses from IRS harassment. In 1995, he won passage of strict disclosure requirements for lobbyists, the first major overhaul of those laws in 50 years. He has fought for increased funding for the Head Start (http://sourcewatch.org/index.php?title=Head_Start&action=edit) preschool program, Title I (http://sourcewatch.org/index.php?title=Title_I&action=edit) for educationally disadvantaged students, and Pell Grants (http://sourcewatch.org/index.php?title=Pell_Grant&action=edit) and loans for college and vocational school students.

Noce family tree; but, he is another one of those "career politicians" that I don't think our founding fathers expected when our government was established (1979 to 2008).

Dingell even more so! He's been around Washington since 1955. He was there when Ike was still President. Wow.

Yes, all of them...inside Michigan and outside Michigan (T. Kennedy, for example).

Time for them to go!

They've all been there too long, but we keep re-electing them. (Guess it falls on us.)
