Grand Traverse County is truly one of Michigan’s wonders on the Great Lakes.

Located in the northwestern section of Michigan's Lower Peninsula, this county features East and West Bays, separated by the Old Mission Peninsula.

The area was named by French explorers in the late 1830's, who perceived the walk across the Old Mission Peninsula as La Grande Traverse, or a long distance.

A Presbyterian mission was built there in 1839, which the peninsula was eventually named after.

Grand Traverse County features 3 major cities, Traverse City (http://www.infomi.com/city/traversecity), (the county seat), Kingsley (http://www.infomi.com/city/kingsley) and Fife Lake (http://www.infomi.com/city/fifelake).

The area is primarily known for tourism, not only for its beautiful Lake Michigan coastline, but also inland areas, featuring the Boardman River, ( known for its excellent steelhead fishing), several large lakes and forests.

It is also known as the world leader in cherry production, celebrating the Cherry Festival annually at the end of June at Traverse City.

The County also has a diverse economic base, including plastics manufacturing, woodworking, food processing, and medical technology, just to name a few.

Whether you visit for a day or a week, Traverse City is the kind of place you can come back to again and again, and always find something interesting to do.
