Marquette County is located along the southern shores of Lake Superior in Michigan’s central Upper Peninsula. It is Michigan’s largest county in geographical size, covering 1841 square miles. It was named after Father Marquette, the famous Jesuit missionary who came here during the late 1600’s. The terrain varies from flat and swampy to a rocky mountain range in the north, filled with iron ore, discovered early by fur traders and which helped supply the Union during the Civil War.

Today, iron ore is still mined here, a major contributor to the area’s economy: Giant ore ships load from railroad cars on the north side of Marquette (http://www.infomi.com/city/marquette), the county seat. Other major contributions to the economy include paper manufacturing and tourism. There are many outdoor recreational opportunities year ‘round, including fishing, boating and canoeing, hiking, snowmobiling and two-trackin’.

Most importantly, this is truly one of the state’s premiere beauty spots -- certainly a must-see when discovering Michigan!
