"Great Resources And Opportunities In the Heartlands"

Population: 61,266 (2000 Census)
Montcalm County was established by the Michigan Legislature as an independent political unit on March 29, 1850. The first county seat was located in Greenville (http://www.infomi.com/city/greenville). It was moved to Stanton (http://www.infomi.com/city/stanton), however in 1860 because Stanton was considered to be more of the geographical center of the eastern 16 townships. The first courthouse was wooden, built in 1860. It was replaced by a brick structure in 1870, costing $1,500.00. In 1879 another courthouse was built, this one with fireproof vaults. It burned down in 1905. The current courthouse was built in 1910, costing about $50,000.00.
Today, Montcalm County contains a diversity of services and industry as its economic base. Some of these include: refrigerator mfg., engine bearings, plastics, printing, paper roll headers, tools, dies, jigs, brass fittings and wood furniture. Agriculturally, Montcalm County is a center for potato production. Tourism also plays its part here, with many lakes dotted with cottages, as well as scenic countryside. So if you want to get away for a day, c’mon over and experience for yourself the variety Montcalm County has to offer.
