I use to visit friends and relatives in Garden City several years ago. We almost always had lunch at the Coney Island place that use to be located on Ford, just a half block east of Middlebelt. Last week I had to drive through the area several times and was sad to see the Coney Island place gone.

Also gone was a restaurant that was on Middlebelt, just north of Ford. They use to serve the best (and biggest) corn beef sandwiches! There's a Chinese Restaurant there now.

Even though those two places are gone, that area of Garden City has really cleaned up! It looks beautiful there with the new lighting, buildings, new paint jobs, etc.

Plato's Coney Island is still in Garden City! They moved a year or two ago to a new, larger location on Ford Rd between Brandt and Henry Ruff next to the Video Stop in the Sheridan Square shopping center on the north side of Ford. Very good place!

Not sure how long ago the corned beef place was there, but I know Kitty's Chop Suey has been there awhile (since the 70s I'd say). I haven't heard too much good about it, but New Peking is very highly acclaimed and won 2nd place in the Vote 4 the Best contest for Chinese in Metro Detroit, as voted by the general public.

Next to Kitty's is the Garden City Cafe, which may have been the place you went to. It had a number of names before it became what it is now. GREAT place. Tons of good homemade food. And for the record I have had tons of corned beef and the Garden City Cafe has the best!

And thanks for your post!
