Do you know if your insurance is up to date? How often do you check? How many times a year do you meet with your insurance agent? Are your children listed with your insurance agent? What about your deductibles? Has your insurance agent closed and you were transferred to another office, ever? If you were to get in an accident tonight, would you be able to afford the deductible? If you don't know the answer to any ONE of the above listed questions, please call your insurance agent and make an appointment to go over your policy asap.
My insurance was not up to date. And it's my own fault. September of 2006 I lost more than half of my income. In an effort to be able to afford my monthly insurance premium I asked my insurance agent to raise ALL my deductibles to the maximum, had car rental removed, and broad collision.
I know I'm going to be criticized for doing all that, but, it was either do what I did or go without insurance. I have full coverage for my car, renters insurance, and life insurance. I've never been without insurance, and I wasn't about to begin that practice.
I bring this up for a couple reasons. A couple years ago my nephew was in a car accident with my sisters car. Her insurance agent stated my nephew wasn't covered because he wasn't listed. As a matter of fact, the agent said, we didn't even know you had a child. What happened was, my sister had insurance through one office, that had eventually closed, so, they were transferred to another office. She didn't know that not all of the information was transferred. She thankfully had her original documents from the other office, and insurance for my nephew was granted.
My son was in an accident with my car the day after Christmas. He was not injured at all. However, as of today, my car has been declared a total loss. At the time of the accident, I had forgotten that I had raised all the deductibles and removed the two things. And now I'm stuck. With the high deductible and what insurance is paying, there's still two car payments left. I'm told I could fight that, however, I've decided to make my son pay the last two payments, plus I'm making him save the amount of the deductible.
They say everything happens for a reason, and I'm guessing this car accident has happened so I would pay more attention to my insurance coverage. And to ask everyone I know, is your insurance coverage up to date?
