Event Ending Date: 4/20/2008 Tues. - Sat. 10 am - 5 pm, Sunday noon-5An exhibition of works from one of the most influential artists to emerge from the Harlem Renaissance era, Jacob Lawrence features more than 80 colorful prints produced between 1963 and 2000, including works from three of the artist's narrative series. Jacob Lawrence told the stories of heroes and heroines of African American history: Frederick Douglass,Harriet Tubman and John Brown, among others. His style was influenced by cubism, expressionism and other modern styles, but was also very much his own. By simplifying the human figure to flat zones of color and emphasizing gestures, shapes and positions, Lawrence communicates universal themes of sadness and hope, struggle and triumph. Open Tuesday through Saturday 10 a.m. - 5 p.m.; Sunday Noon - 5 p.m.
