Due to a computer programming error, approximately 2.7 million SSA-1099s issued for 2007 contained incorrect amounts. Florida had the most affected beneficiaries, 196,742, followed by Texas at 188,361, California at 157,288, Illinois at 124,707, and North Carolina at 110,616. Beneficiaries in Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, and some foreign countries were affected as well.

The programming error affected beneficiaries who purchased Medicare Advantage or prescription drug plans under Social Security parts C and/or D in 2006, as well as some beneficiaries who had garnishment deduction amounts in 2006. An SSA-1099 for an affected beneficiary may contain incorrect information in Boxes 3 and 5 regarding benefits for 2007. The field containing a description of the amount in Box 3 may be incorrect as well.

The Social Security Administration has corrected the error and is mailing revised SSA-1099s to beneficiaries whose forms contained incorrect amounts. The corrected forms should have been mailed by Jan. 25, 2008, and marked "Corrected Tax Information" in red typeface.

If a taxpayer receives a corrected form after using information on an incorrect SSA-1099 to file a return, he or she should file an amended return.
